About
Natural Clothes rates garments that are made entirely of natural fibers: cotton, linen, hemp, wool, silk and the like. We look at what a garment is made of, what has been done to it, and how sure we can be about either.
The zero-synthetics gate
Before anything is scored, every garment passes a gate. If any part of it is synthetic, whether that is the fabric, the thread, the elastic, the buttons or the labels, it scores zero and is excluded. Only fully natural garments go on to be rated.
Six axes, one score
Garments that pass the gate are scored out of 100 on six weighted axes:
| Axis | Weight | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Purity | 25 | What every component is made of. |
| Chemistry | 25 | Dyes, bleaching and finishes applied to the fabric. |
| Growing | 15 | How the fiber was farmed, from regenerative organic to conventional. |
| Provenance | 15 | Where it was grown, spun and sewn, and whether that chain is traceable. |
| Durability | 10 | Fabric weight, construction and care. |
| People | 10 | Labor standards, and animal welfare where relevant. |
How sure are we?
Every rating carries an evidence meter with three levels: claimed (the brand says so), checked (we found the certificate in the certifier’s own records), and tested (independent lab or third-party testing). Most ratings today are at the claimed level, and we mark them that way.
Who we are
Natural Clothes is operated by Cattaneo Enterprises. Brands do not pay to be rated and cannot pay to change a score. Some links on the site are affiliate links; see our affiliate disclosure. Read the full method on how we rate, or get in touch.
